About the Qualification

The LASER Level 2 Award for Security Officers in the Private Security Industry (Top up) provides full coverage of the Top up competences specified by the SIA and therefore meets its requirements for a licence-linked Top up qualification.

Under the terms of the Private Security Industry Act (2001) individuals working in specific sectors of the private security industry must be licensed by the Security Industry Authority (SIA). One criterion for obtaining a licence is the achievement of a licence-linked qualification. From 1st October 2021, a Top up qualification is required for holders of an SIA Security Guarding licence (qualified pre-1st April 2021) applying to renew their licence.  A Top up qualification is also required for first time SIA licence applicants holding an SIA licence to practice qualification awarded pre-1st April 2021.

A Security Guarding licence is required when manned guarding activity that does not fall under the descriptions of door supervision, close protection, cash and valuables in transit, or public space surveillance (CCTV) is undertaken.

Successful learners will:

• Understand terror threats and the role of the security operative in the event of a threat
• Know how to minimise risk to personal safety at work
• Know what actions to take in relation to global (or critical) incidents
